Speakers use more redundant references with language learners: Evidence for communicatively-efficient referential choice

چکیده

• Speakers use more redundant references when their interlocutors are learners. Increased found for both child and adult controlling discourse status. According to the communicative efficiency hypothesis, speakers should produce linguistic material comprehension difficulty increases. Here, we investigate a potential source of – listeners’ language proficiency on speakers’ productions, using referential choice as case study. Referential is influenced by efficiency: pronouns used less than full noun phrases (NPs) predictable referents (Tily & Piantadosi, 2009). However, extent which it listener debated. compare participants’ descriptions same picture book children, L2 learners native speakers. We find that NPs alike, illustrating an effect (regardless age) production choices. Importantly, increased relative discourse-related differences (e.g., previous mention), suggesting direct relation between perceived choice.

Communicatively efficient language production and case-marker omission in Japanese

Recent studies hypothesize that language production is governed by the principle of efficient information transmission: Speakers tend to omit elements whose information content is contextually predictable, while providing more linguistic signal to convey otherwise less predictable information. However, previous findings in support of this hypothesis are also compatible with alternative accounts...

Toddlers use speech disfluencies to predict speakers' referential intentions.

The ability to infer the referential intentions of speakers is a crucial part of learning a language. Previous research has uncovered various contextual and social cues that children may use to do this. Here we provide the first evidence that children also use speech disfluencies to infer speaker intention. Disfluencies (e.g. filled pauses 'uh' and 'um') occur in predictable locations, such as ...

The Relationship between the Use and Choice of Communication Strategies and Language Proficiency of Iranian EFL Learners

Communication strategies (CSs) are systematic attempts by language learners to encode or decode meaning in a target language in situations where the appropriate target language rules have not been formed. Based on this view, communication strategies can be seen as compensatory means for making up for linguistic deficiencies of second or foreign language learners. Within the conceptual framework...

A More Expressive Deterministic Query Language with Efficient Symmetry-Based Choice Construct

In this paper, symmetry-based choice mechanisms are exploited to compute deterministic queries. We investigate a particular form of these choice mechanisms, called specified symmetry choice. This mechanism is efficient (i.e. computable in polynomial time) and can be added to Fixpoint Logic to give a language that is more powerful than the extension of Fixpoint with Counting.
